Project: Unidos por el Arte- Stars of the Universe
Commissioned by: Julia de Burgos Cultural arts center -Cleveland, Ohio
Purpose:
For Unidos por el arte, "Stars of the Universe" was a series created (5 drawings 4ftx6ft) of iconic female portraits. These females were regular everyday Latin -x woman of color. these portrait were cross referenced to historical roots ancestry traditions of both Puerto Rican Taino and African warrior figure representation, using tribal and symbolic art. The goal was to embrace their life story into the piece as apart of Julia de Burgos’ activist views as linked within her poetry. Also included a reference to Julia de Burgos within the paintings reflection that directly references the embodiment of the portraits illustrated theme.
As a way of building a connection to the community to clark-fulton that surrounds the center, there was also a publication of these paintings that the center used for Hispanic heritage month and brought awareness of the community and importance of Julia de Burgos and her connection to civil rights for Afro- Latinas(our latin-x POC’s).
